The experimental work was developed on TMCP 50 mm thick plates at two yield strength levels: grade 355 and 450 Mpa. 355 grade plates were produced at two Nb content (250 ppm and 50 ppm) to evaluate the effect of this element on the heated affected zone (HAZ) toughness. The plates were characterized in terms of tensile tests at room temperature and - 10 C. 1/2V joints were produced using one flux and three wire types. Crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) tests were carried out in the range -50 C to -10 C, to examine the influence of the Nb content and the effect of the matching level on the toughness of the different HAZ microstructures. Similar mechanical and microstructural characterization was developed by means of wide plate tests. The obtained results were used to verify the defect acceptance criteria in welded structures suggested by the PD6493. Finally, finite element (FE) (MARC - rev K4) calculations of 4 types of joint (I, V, K, X), at two mismatch levels (+20% and -20%), at 5 loading levels (80%, 90%, 105%, 110% of the yield point), on 50 mm thick plates in order to obtain stress/strain field near the welded metal were performed.
