Instability criterion of tearing modes for arbitrary magnetic shear configuration
The instability criterion for m >/= 2 tearing modes is derived and analysed for arbitrary magnetic shear configuration. The ideal external kink equation is solved analytically by means of proper transformations. An analytic expression of the criterion parameter Delta is derived from analytic solutions which satisfy both the boundary conditions at the plasma core and conductive wall. The instability criterion depends on the locations of the resistive layer and of the conductive wall, and on a dimensionless parameter Lambda related to the ratio of the gradients of the equilibrium current density and of the rotational transform. Strauss' Delta formula and the previous instability criterion are recovered in the large-m limit without conducting wall.
