Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Plastics should be regarded as highly innovative materials, which can be widely found applications in industry and daily life. Used plastics should also be regarded as valuable materials. They could recycled and reprocessed before being considered as a final waste, which can then be used for energy production and/or reducing agent (mixed plastics) for iron ore.

Research and development programmes on recycling and on degradable polymers are suggested (eg development of degradable plastics in the basis of lactic acid). The use of educative programmes in schools and communities are proposed to increase the awareness of the public to the detrimental effect of pollution caused by plastics. .
