A research programme in support of Eurocode 8 is presently being carried out at the European Laboratory of Structural Assessment. The activity includes the assessment and the possible modification of the code clauses relevant to nonstructural infill panels in frames. In particular, the clauses about irregularly infilled frames are being studied. The effects of in-plan irregularities were addressed by means of shaking table tests, conducted at ISMES on two two storey frames. One was tested bare, the other with masonry infills in two adjacent sides. Preliminary analyses of the test results seem to confirm that in-plan irregularities do not result in larger ductility demands. For the cases of in-height irregularities, new design rules were proposed. The possible advantages of these rules were investigated by means of numerical simulations. To confirm the findings, pseudodynamic tests are being conducted on a full-scale three-story building with soft-storey configurations.
