Abstract

In recent years, the requirement of controlled reaction products releases in case of thermal runaway accidental events in batch type reactors has led to expend much theoretical and experimental efforts to improve the understanding of the complex phenomenology associated with pressure relief. In this framework, the JRC produced the RELIEF code which describes the 2-phase behaviour of multicomponent chemical reacting fluids during depressurization in batch reactors. In this paper we report the results obtained in the simulation of runaway processes during styrene polymerization taking place, in small as well in large scale experimental apparatus.
