The main objective of Action 5 of PISC III was the experimental evaluation of the performance of test procedures and techniques available to inspect steam generator tubes in-service. The exercise was characterised by the geometry (thin-walled tubing), the material (Inconel 600), the large number of flaws and the inspection techniques (predominantly eddy current with a few teams using ultrasonics).
Early in 1990, the experimental programme was formulated. This involved the finalisation of the test matrix, the capability tests on loose tubes and the circulation of the training boxes. During June 1991, the circulation of the blind test tubes to the 29 participating organisations from 9 different countries commenced. By the end of 1993, the planned round robin test was completed on tube assemblies. The data collection, adaptation and evaluation was completed in 1996.
