Up to the end of the 1980's, little attention was paid to the development of standards for high temperature corrosion testing of ceramics despite widespread research studies on corrosion being conducted over more that 20 years. Until recently many people have argued that the formulation of a specific standard test for assessing corrosion properties was a waste of effort due to the multitude of interacting test parameters involved. This attitude has changed and several technical committees have been established to deal with corrosion standards on a world-wide basis.

This work describes briefly the state-of-the-art regarding the development of standards for high temperature oxidation testing of ceramics and discusses the effect of some key test parameters (eg thermal cycling and supporting material) on the kinetics of oxidation of a silicon nitride based ceramic which illustrates the need of further test methodologies developments. .
