Abstract

The tests performed within this investigation as well as results from other investigations on welded steel joints reveal that multiaxial stress/strain states with constant principal stress/strain directions are adequately evaluated by the distorsion energy hypotheses after von Mises on basis of nominal, structural or local stresses/strains under consideration of size effects. However, for the complex situation with changing principal stress/strain directions, simulated in this investigation by out-of-phase loading between bending and torsion, none of the conventional hypotheses was able to asses the typical reduction of fatigue life for ductile materials using either nominal or structural or local stresses/strains. Therefore, for welded joints from ductile steel a hypotheses was developed, which assumes that cracks are initiated by shear and their interaction in different directions of a surface-element or volume-element.
