In this feasibility study various methods were used to investigate the way in which inhomogeneities in cold rolled steel strip can be detected. The first step was to see whether the literature presents any practicable solutions. Next, a number of techniques were assessed in terms of their practical utility. The most attractive or promising techniques were then subjected to more detailed research. This research consisted of mathematical calculations on the basis of a model using finite elements methods, and/or laboratory research on samples. The literature revealed that, of the various techniques, the magnetic and ultrasonic techniques should offer the greatest chance of success. Pulse thermography also appeared to have good possibilities. These three techniques were then further researched.
