The European Train Control System (ETCS) offers several options and possibilities to fulfil the different requirements of the European railway administrations in order to adapt it to existing interlockings and centralized train control systems. The open architecture of the ETCS must allow for flexibility of adaptation and expandability due to the different requirements faced by the railways. This can be met by utilizing new information and telecommunication technologies which open the way for improvement of railway operation, based on more efficient monitoring of traffic and localization of trains. This System Requirement Specification (SRS) document defines the system requirements for the ETCS. It is the translation of operating requirements defined by the Functional Requirements Specification (FRS) into a technical specification. A summary is intended to give a rough overview of the contents of each subsequent chapter so that readers interested only in special subjects can easily find the relevant chapters.
