Abstract

In order to improve the measuring of line integrated electron density at the stellarator experiment W7-AS a 10-channel microwave interferometer was designed. It enables to reconstruct the density profile accurately, but the accessible density range is restricted. The interferometer channels are arranged horizontally. The probing signals are generated by Gunn-oscillators. In order to reduce the number of oscillators needed in the microwave section of the system each Gunn-oscillator is also used for heterodyne detection. By using a comparator and a Schmitt-trigger stage a digital phase measurement is established. The accessible range of peak density is limited by beam refraction. Fringe losses appear, if the density of 7E19 m{-3} is exceeded. The instrument extends the set of diagnostic tools for W7-AS plasmas.
