Abstract

This report presents the work done in the framework of the ECSC research: Section measurement of the hot rolled long products by light sectioning method. The main principle used calls upon a basic principle of descriptive geometry, namely the intersection of a volume and a plane. This intersection materializes the section of the product. In the particular application of this principle, the volume is made of the product to be inspected (the billet), with monotonic section and moving linearly along the rolling axis, the plane is realized using a light source (laser) and cylindrical optics, the visualization of the intersection is realized using a matricial camera connected to an image processing system. A computer reconstitutes the profile, extracts the dimensions and presents the results. Geometric precautions and an adapted calibration procedure make it possible to revert to the real profile using digital processing.
