Abstract

After cold-rolling, the strain-hardened steel strip is covered with a surface pollution film essentially made of rolling oil residues and iron fines, produced by friction in the roll gap, to be eliminated prior to annealing, The necessary cleaning operation is usually carried out electrolytically in an alkaline medium, the detergent constituents of which depend on the type of annealing to be applied. In the case of continuous annealing, surface residues are removed in a phosphate-based cleaner bath. Therefore, part of the laboratory simulation work reported here was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the various sections of an alkaline cleaning line in terms of fats and iron fines elimination. This has made it necessary to develop a dedicated simulation unit capable of faithfully reproducing the conditions of industrial cleaning.
