In the first part of the research a conventional apparatus was designed for measuring height of foams formed by slags. The structure of this equipment was deduced from literature and from the analysis of foaming liquids behaviour. Both cold and hot model (for carrying out room and high temperature tests) were realized. In these models two phases were present; acidic water solution and oil layer in cold model and hot metal and slag layer in hot one. Foams were produced by means of a gas generated by a chemical reaction occurring at the interphases: acid-base reaction in cold model, reduction of iron ore by carbon dissolved in hot metal in hot model. The work performed outlined the necessity to investigate foam phenomena not as a separate phenomenon but integrated in the study of whole process occurring into the converter part of a smelting reduction process.
