Abstract

In this work nonlinear time series analysis using delay coordinate embedding has been applied to experimental temperature data from a batch chemical reactor with the aim to detect the onset of the thermal excursion of the reaction mass. The early warning detection criterion (ie when the divergence becomes positive on a segment of the reaction path) developed has been applied to simulated and experimental data. The results demonstrate the validity of such approach opening a new route, in between the simple use of measured variables and the complex model-based state reconstruction techniques, to assess in advance hazardous situations in chemical reactors.
