A procedure for the determination of chlorophyll and suspended sediment concentration in shallow water from Landsat Thematic Mapper data has been set up, based on numerical computation. The globally positive results of the study suggest a practical procedure based on the use of computed look-up tables that convert the value yielded by the infinite-depth algorithm to the actual concentration. Clearly, the computation must be carried out with input data (absorption and scattering coefficients, bottom albedo, correlation with chlorophyll, suspended sediment, yellow substance absorption etc) corresponding to the local situation. A sensitivity analysis, performed with statistical data specific of the situation (eg depth uncertainty), provides an estimate of the quality of the results attainable, as well as the limits for the application of the procedure (eg minimum depth for determination of concentration with prefixed error).
