Abstract

Pinonaldehyde (cis-4-acetyl-2,2-dimethyl-cyclobutyl-ethanal), nopinone (6,6-diemethylbicyclo-3(3.1.1)-heptane-2-one, endolim (3-(1-methylethenyl)-6-oxo-heptanal and lactol (4-hydroxy-4-methyl-5-hexenal) are intermediates in the tropospheric oxidation of the widely emitted terpenes alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, limonene and linalool, respectively. The reactions of OH, NO(3) or O(3) with pinonaldehyde, nopinone, endolim and lactol have been studied with long path Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The reaction rate constants have been determined at 740 Torr and 298 K, which allow an estimate of their atmospheric lifetimes.
