Abstract

Area sampling frames of regular units are much cheaper to set up than area frames of segments with physical boundaries. The area estimates precision of both approaches has been shown to be very similar. However some difficulties arise when dealing with stratification maps that do not follow the grid upon which the segment are defined. When the stratification is based on CORINE Land Cover, the number of segments that are cut by strata limits can be very high. This paper analyses alternative ways of using such information for stratification.
