Formulation of a nonhydrostatic vorticity model (TVM) and application to topographic waves and to the 1972 Boulder windstorm
The formulation and application of the nonhydrostatic vorticity model (TVM) are described including a third order piecewise parabolic advection scheme. Various types of topography-induced 2-dimensional, hydrostatic mountain wave cases and nonhydrostatic mountain wave cases, with different degrees of non-linearity were numerically simulated, and results compared to available analytical solutions and/or results from other primitive equation mesoscale models. The 1972 Boulder windstorm was likewise simulated. Results for all simulations were obtained without any explicit diffusion, and with reduced resolutions, due to the characteristics of its plan position modulation (PPM) advection scheme.
