Quality of air pollution measurements: European view
In view of the harmonization of the measurements in the European air quality monitoring networks, the European Commission (Directorate General XI) has carried out Quality Assurance programmes for the pollutants sulphur dioxide, black smoke (1984-1988), nitrogen dioxide (1992-1996) and is currently organizing a similar programme for PM10 and ozone (1994-1998). These programmes are implemented by the European Reference Laboratory of Air Pollution (ERLAP) of the Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Italy) in collaboration with the European Union (EU) Member States. An overview is given of the most recent results of the harmonization activities, as well as conclusions in terms of overall data quality in the EU air quality monitoring networks.
