The application of the Web technology as a powerful and interactive information service in the field of environmental sciences: The example of the JRC Environment Institute's Web site
The Environment Institute's (EI) Web site (http://www.ei.jrc.it) is based on a communication architecture which combines both static and dynamic information at different hierarchial levels. The consistent navigation through this information is assured by the logical structure of the information content, the harmonization of the text and the graphic layout and a proper integration of search engines, Java applets and other specific EI's local Web sites. The content of these pages is the most dynamic part of the EI's Web site and it may reside on the main EI's Web site, in other EI's local Web sites or even externally. Examples are given demonstrating how this dynamic part is used for the remote interchange of information and for the interactive visualization of environmental geographical information system (GIS) maps through Java-enabled Web browsers.
