From PISC to ENIQ: Assuring inspection effectiveness through qualification
It is well known that the presence of crack-like defects can seriously reduce the failure strength of a welded steel structure. Such defects can be detected, located and sized by applying non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques such as radiography, ultrasonics and eddy currents. Until 20 years ago there was little quantitative information on the effectiveness of such techniques especially when they were applied to such components as those built into the main pressurized coolant circuits of nuclear power reactors.
