Abstract

This report explores the link between land-use change and flooding. The relationship between vulnerability and the impact of flood events is also investigated. In particular, the search for studies that measure the hydrological impacts of changes in land-use and land-cover has been emphasized. The results of this report cover the period 1976-1996 and are based on journal articles and text books covering the topics of land use change, flood models as well as flood vulnerability and floodplain management. In particular, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

- To what extent are recent floods influenced by changes in land-use and land-cover?;
- Can the impact of changes in land-use and land-cover on flooding be generalized?;
- What are the most significant land-use changes that have contributed to increased flooding?;
- Has there really been a significant increase in the number of flood hazard occurrences or is the severity of the impact of flood events more related to increased vulnerabilities and higher population exposure to the events?
