  • European comparison of nitrogen dioxide calibration methods quality assurance programme No 1, QAP/1 of the European directive for nitrogen dioxide

Abstract

The continuous monitoring of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is regulated in European Member States by Directive 85/203/EEC which imposes that the method of analysis will be the chemiluminescence described in ISO norm 7996. To ensure the harmonization of NO2 monitoring throughout the EU, the Commission of European Communities decided that an intercomparison exercise was needed to assess the measurement comparability of laboratories using different calibration methods. The intercomparison exercise (quality assurance programme no 1, QAP/1) was designed and organized by the European Laboratory of Air Pollution (ERLAP) to evaluate the effect of different calibration methods on quality measurements under laboratory conditions. Subsequently, a second exercise (quality assurance programme no 2, QAP/2) was foreseen to evaluate the quality measurements in field conditions. This report only presents the results of the QAP 1.
