Abstract

The preparation of UF(6) Isotopic Reference Materials to a precisely desired value of a molar isotope abundance or an isotope abundance ratio has been performed for many years. Simultaneously meeting target values of the abundances of two different isotopes or two different isotope ratios poses a challenge to the experimentalist. Calculational procedures for mixing isotopes were developed in the framework of the preparation of uranium(hexafluoride) Isotopic Reference Materials to a desired isotope abundance (ratio). Slightly different algorithms are applied for the calculations towards a desired value of an isotope amount ratio (eg n((235)U)/n((238)U) or a desired (amount) isotope abundance. Experimental techniques were developed and optimized in order to meet the calculated values as closely as possible. Examples are given in order to illustrate the potential of the methodology developed.
