Abstract

This research is concerned with examining the restraint provided to thin steel purlins by a range of modern roof systems, and to identify if lateral buckling of the purlins is prevented. The investigation takes the form of the following separate parts which are covered in this report:

- Small-scale tests to determine the strength and stiffness of the restraints provided by a range of modern roof systems;
- Large-scale tests on purlins subject to vertical load and negative pressure. The purlins are arranged in both single and double spans, and support various generic roof systems;
- Analytical investigations to establish the critical moment of restrained purlins subject to various actions.

Five different roof systems with one control (roof system with no insulation layer) were investigated with purlin sections of both zed and sigma shapes. apes.
