Abstract

The connection of the segregation with the voids in the centre of 177 mm round strands has been investigated on 40 round samples with 11 m length in average. The cavity volume was measured using the buoyancy method on 1 m long core sections with 40 mm diametre. The geometry of the voids was realised by X-ray images. Using these results, the centre segregation was investigated on large areas with the microprobe analyser. Eight steel grades were included: S 30/Z 3, C 45/A 1, C 60, 38 Mn 6, S 52 VS/A 1, 10 CrMo 9 10, 9 SMn 28 and 100 CrS 6. In all steels U-shaped bridges are found with enclosed melt and a cavity below them. Sometimes these bridges are torn. The centre segregation in microsections can be quantitatively described by Gauß functions of the frequency of areas.
