Abstract

The objective of this project was to develop a quantitative description of the gas flow in the region between burden surface and uptakes. From this description it should be possible to determine in which way the gas leaving the burden must be sampled in order to obtain a continuous measurement of the radial distribution of gas composition and temperature at the burden surface. The research programme was divided into two parts. The first part involved measurements in blast furnaces 6 and 7. On one hand these measurements were used to gain information about the gas flow between burden surface and above-burden probes and on the other hand as input data for numerical calculations. The second part involved the development of a mathematical model of the gas flow in the top of blast furnace 6. The three-dimensional mathematical model developed was used to gain quantitative information about the gas flow pattern between burden surface and the uptakes.
