  • The certification of the triglyceride contents of an anhydrous butter fat reference material with additional value for free cholesterol: CRM 519


The report describes the preparation of an anhydrous butter fat reference material (CRM 519). The reference material (RM) is suitable for use with the official EU method for detection of non-milk fats in milk fat based on triglyceride analysis in combination with triglyceride formulae. It can only be used to check the performance of the specific methods for which the material has been certified and for the quality control of those analytical methods. The homogeneity and stability studies and the analytical work related to the certification of the contents of triglycerides and cholesterol are described. All the results of the certification exercise obtained by 8 participating laboratories as well as the methods used to certify the mass fractions of triglycerides and free cholesterol (inclusive all minor sterols) are presented. According to the official EU method, the application of capillary gas chromatography (GC) instead of the standard packed column GC was as well allowed, if comparable results were achieved. Certified values are given for all 16 triglycerides and cholesterol.
