A highly critical problem of strip casting technology is lateral containment of liquid steel in the mould. A fully innovative system was worked out based on steel electromagnetic containment (EMC). The basic concept of EMC is magnetic fields interaction inside the mould. Magnetic fields are produced by a source outside the mould with an electric current circulating in the appropriate way through the molten steel. The main advantage of this system is that it does not require a direct contact between rolls and side plates, hence it eliminates or minimizes the problems associated with the traditional lateral containment systems. After a preliminary study on EMC possible implementation, two solutions have been detected which could be adopted on the Terni Strip Casting plant to prevent only the steel seepages on the contact arc of the tools with the side plates.
