Abstract

The first part of this paper is an overview which covers a wide range of issues related to the control of ITER plasmas. The second part of the paper considers the measurement of the safety factor profile as an essential diagnostic for ITER. The results of calculations of the Faraday rotation and the Cotton-Mouton effect for various plasma configurations (considered as typical) are presented and various beam geometries which can eventually be realized in spite of the restricted access.
