Reports on tasks for scientific cooperation: Risk assessment of aflatoxins
The scientific cooperation task on aflatoxins (Task 3.2.1) required that a working document was prepared in support of a Scientific Committee for Food (SCF) risk evaluation on aflatoxins, including an estimation of dietary intake in individual Member States. Data on the occurrence of aflatoxins have been collated on a commodity basis and key points drawn out. Commodities include some nuts, figs, cereals, spices and products containing these commodities. Data are also reported for aflatoxin M1 in milk and milk products. Comments from each country on sampling and analytical methodology have been collated in an Appendix. Consumption and intake data are also collated according to commodity, with individual country's comments gathered in further Appendices. The report contains indicators of total dietary intake of aflatoxins, which are derived by summation of estimates of aflatoxin intake by population from individual food commodities. These indicators depend completely on the number and types of individual foods considered within the summation and are unlikely to be reliable or representative. It was concluded that they must not be used to derive an estimate of total aflatoxin intake for a particular country or for Europe.
