Reports on tasks for scientific cooperation: Assessment of dietary intake of nitrates by the population in the European Union, as a consequence of the consumption of vegetables
The Commission asked the Scientific Committee for Food (SCF) to review, from a public health standpoint, the presence of nitrate in foodstuffs in general, and vegetables in particular. The SCF advised that it had insufficient information on the consumption of these vegetables, which are the primary source of nitrate in the individual EU Member States, to judge whether setting maximum limits would have a significant impact on overall dietary intakes. The Commission proposed that the Member States undertake a Task within the framework of Council Directive 93/5/EC with the objective of providing a scientific basis for the evaluation and management of risks to public health arising from dietary exposure to nitrate. Special attention was to be paid to population groups at high risk. The results are published in this report.
