The European Soil Bureau
The European Soil Bureau (ESB) was created in 1996 as a new body within the European Commission. It is located at the Joint Research Centre (JRC), Ispra, Italy, and is part of the Agriculture Information Systems Unit (AIS) of the Space Applications Institute (SAI). Its aim is to carry out scientific and technical duties in order to harmonise soil information relevant to Community policies, its relevant General Directorates (DGs), to the European Environment Agency (EEA) and to concerned institutions of the Member States. In the frame of the activities of the European Soil Bureau (ESB) several soil databases have been compiled covering the EU Member States and bordering countries. These databases will be integrated in the future European Soil Information System (EUSIS) that will allow for scale transfer between different coverages at varying resolution.
