In rural areas of countries under development, a larger utility network for electricity supply cannot be economic, because low population density and low power demand per household would not justify the high investment costs of power distribution. Stand-alone systems such as photovoltaic (PV) solar systems have been providing, for many years, services such as lighting, refrigeration, communication, drinking water pumping, irrigation, etc. This paper gives an overview of the progress in rural applications and related quality standards.
