Abstract

The risks of different types of chemical substances for human and the environment are assessed on the basis of different legislation. The risk assessment methods are described in detail in the European Technical Guidance Document on risk assessment for new and existing substances. EUSES (the EU system for the evaluation of substances) was developed as an instrument for making assessments in accordance with these guidelines. EUSES is a decision-support instrument which enables government authorities, research institutes and chemical companies to carry out rapid and efficient assessments of the general risks posed by substances.
