Crash-worthiness testing of thin sheet metal boxes by a Hopkinson bar method
A method, based on a large Hopkinson bar, is presented for an improved dynamic compression testing of thin sheet metal boxes, used as energy absorbing elements. The method produces the load-shortening and absorbed energy-shortening curves and provides insights on the fold formation mechanism. Further, it captures in a unique manner, the peak crushing load, and furnishes precision results valuable for finite element codes validation.
