Abstract

The actual problems in an international cooperation to combat the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials are described from the perspective of the experience gained at the Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU). As part of its research and development programme it has developed and implemented techniques for the safeguard of nuclear materials to verify operators' declarations for accountancy purposes, or to detect clandestine operations as defined by the 93+2 programme of the IAEA.
