The use of iron-rich sinter in the blast furnace burden will bring a reduction of the slag volume per ton of hot metal, and consequently the productivity will increase. Several series of sinter pot trials have allowed determination of the conditions to produce iron-rich sinter (62%) using mainly hematite iron ores. The main conditions are:

- Mix with a good balling aptitude;
- CaO + SiO(2) >/= 10.5%;
- High basicity (CaO/SiO(2), if possible >/= 2;
- Low Al(2)O(3) and MgO contents.

Sinters containing 60% iron have been produced successfully in both sinter pot and sintering plant. plant.
