Abstract

In 1990, the European Commission co-sponsored the publication of a map of marine research facilities of the European Community. In its version of 1990, the map has been obsolete for some time. The European Union has expanded from 12 to 15 countries, and fundamental changes have taken place in the configuration of Central and Eastern Europe. Furthermore, Norway, Iceland and Israel have become full partners of the European Union's research programmes, and thus their scientists are normally members of the research community targeted by the map. This document is the second edition. By including Scandinavian and Eastern European countries, the map now covers a much greater geographical area than before. Because of this, and in order to keep the overall size manageable, the newly provided addresses of research centres had to be printed in an accompanying booklet. Part of the space thus saved was used to list the major European data centres: the map acknowledges in this way one of the achievements of the MAST programme, which was to promote coordinated data management and exchange.
