From 29 October to 1 November 1996, the European Commission sponsored an international conference on Mediterranean desertification in Crete, Greece. The aims of the conference were to raise the profile of EU research and policy in this field, to alert both the public and policy-makers to the extent, nature and urgency of the problem, and to translate the results of scientific research into policy development and actions. Three workshops followed the plenary presentations:

- Formulating research priorities;
- Cooperation in combating desertification;
- Mediterranean land use and sustainability: Management practices and mitigation.
