The European Concerted Action COST 503 Powder Metallurgy - Powder based materials was officially approved in 1983 with the following main objectives:

- The organization of European research and development activities in the field of advanced powder metallurgy;
- To initiate collaboration between industry and research institutions;
- The coordination of research activities in the field of powder metallurgy.

The Management Committee of the Action decided to prepare a summary and a critical evaluation of the research activities of COST 503, to be published in five volumes. Volume V presents the production requirements, the characterization and test procedures and the state of the art of know-how on ceramics for high-tech applications. ions.
