Abstract

In Europe, agricultural production estimation techniques allow good management of agricultural markets, especially in the ambit of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). In developing countries, yield and production predictions also serve the purpose of preventing famine and malnutrition which are one of the causes behind social and political instabilities. After highlighting theorical and statistical bases for yield estimation at the plot scale, this publication reviews several methods of estimating and forecasting agricultural crops production over very large areas (national and regional scale), to compare them, to define their respective fields of application, as well as their actual limits.
