Abstract

Heating liquid steel in the tundish with argon-stabilized plasma arcs is one example of the increasing importance of mobile and inert heating systems in metallurgy. In view of this application, trials were carried out in a pilot plasma melting furnace to investigate the mass transfer kinetics between gas-phase and melt, the possibilities of increasing the heat input by adding diatomic and triatomic gases, the metallurgical consequences of these additions, and the effects caused by bottom gas stirring. Mass transfer was mainly investigated taking nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide as examples.
