Abstract

There are a variety of situations in the Joint European Torus (JET) where the energy confinement is reduced from H-mode towards L-mode levels. A report is given of examples for which the major change in the gradient of the electron pressure profile is in the plasma edge. The loss of confinement is brought about by strong gas puffing and is associated with rapid ELMs. The effect of ELMs on confinement is modelled, and used to explain confinement degradation seen in JET. The model is generalized for application to other machines.
