Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Being concerned with the well-being of present and future generations, one of the main goals of the Bank is to protect the environment and improve the quality of life, notably in urban areas where two out of every three Europeans are living. The Bank aims to achieve this through its central function of project finance, by contributing towards the identification and diagnosis of specific problems, assisting with the provision of effective solutions in particular cases and helping to build general awareness. There is an environmental dimension to all the projects which the Bank finances. The Bank as the European Union's financing institution is interested in environmental issues not only because of its mandate but also for financial reasons. Experience has shown that in the long run, environmental considerations always improve the viability and, therefore, the bankability of projects. This policy note explains in broad terms what the Bank is aiming to achieve in the field of the environment and how. The substance is not new. The environment has for a long time been a major concern of the Bank. What is new, however, is a comprehensive public statement on the subject.
