  • Innovation strategies of Europe's largest industrial firms: Results of the PACE survey for information sources, public research, protection of innovations and government programmes

Abstract

The opinions of research and development managers from the European Union's 500 largest manufacturing and industrial firms were obtained using the PACE mailed questionnaire survey. The survey asked about the goals of innovation, external sources of knowledge, public research, methods to protect innovations with a focus on patents, government programmes to support innovation, and barriers to profiting from innovation. The report contains a brief chapter on the methodology and main results, seven chapters based on the main sections of the questionnaire, and a conclusion. Appendix A includes a complete copy of the questionnaire. Appendix B contains additional material on the methodology, including detailed information on the survey design, an analysis of the response rates, and two sections on the influence of the questionnaire design on response rates. Appendix C provides background statistical information for the analyses.
