Abstract

Using a relative rate method, rate constants for the gas-phase reactions of 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBO) with OH radicals, ozone, NO(3) radicals and Cl atoms have been investigated using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The measured values for MBO at 298K ± 2 K and 740 Torr ± 5 Torr total pressure are: k(OH) = (3.92 ± 1.24) E-11 cm{3} molecule {-1} s{-1}, k(O(3)) = (8.6 ± 2.9) E-18 cm{3} molecule {-1} s{-1}, k(NO(3)) = (8.6 ± 2.9) E-15 cm{3} molecule {-1} s {-1} and k(Cl) = (4.72 ± 0.97) E-10 cm{3} molecule {-1} s {-1}. Atmospheric lifetimes have been estimated with respect to the reactions with OH, O(3) NO(3) and Cl. The atmospheric relevance of this compound as a precursor for acetone is also briefly described.
