Abstract

The aim of the research project is to utilise the monitoring system applied to the continuous casting line no.5 at ILVA/TA concerning breakouts, in order to provide the users with an efficient system suitable for indicating similar anomalous occurrences. In particular, the availability of several thermocouples distributed on the four surfaces of the mould allows monitoring of possible thermal exchanges and the manner in which lubricating powders work, so detecting possible breakouts. Consequently, it is possible to locate the presence of powders which does not meet the desired criteria, or is out of specification, as well as clogging of the powders themselves.

Furthermore, the liquid steel stream can be monitored by detecting breakage of the submerged nozzle. The partial or complete blockage of one of the outlet holes as well as the breakage of the nozzle can be indicated by the system. In-depth knowledge can subsequently suggest further developments of these systems, for instance the possibility to be given signals of longitudinal cracks in formation as well as edge breakouts. .
