Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the best operating conditions for the extensive use of oxygen associated with coal injection in order to increase furnace productivity without decreasing chromium yield. The research is being carried out at electric-arc furnace no 4 of 140 t capacity installed at AST steelworks in Terni. The activity has been divided into three basic steps:

- Preliminary tests (specific testing for studying equipment and control systems) and gathering of process parameters from reference standard heats (heats series R);
- Study of operating parameters' influence over chromium oxidation (heats series A, B and C);
- Improvement of operating results (heats series D, E and F).

During the above steps three main aspects have been dealt with:

- Study and testing of operating equipment and control systems;
- Study of process quantities interaction with chromium scorification;
- Application of analysed practices and review of operating results.
